Language requirements

Universities in English-speaking countries

Only the TOEFL iBT and the IELTS Academic are accepted as proof of English proficiency. The examination result has to be on hand already by the time of application.

Minimum scores

  • TOEFL iBT: min. 90 out of 120 points
  • IELTS Academic: min. 6.5 out of 9 points (6.5 overall band, 6.0 writing)

Please note: Some universities may require higher scores or have very specific TOEFL/IELTS scores for each band (reading, listening, writing, speaking). To find out more about specific TOEFL or IELTS score requirements, please consult our partner universities' websites or have a look at our list with specific information about application details.

The TOEFL or IELTS score requirements of at least one university, the student applied for, must be achieved in order to be invited to an interview with the selection panel.

Exception: students from English and translation studies do not need any additional language certificate for the University of Ottawa.

If you would like your TOEFL results to be sent directly to the International Office, please use the code numer 7076 when indicating your institution as a score recipient.

Universities in non-English-speaking countries
  • Philologies/Translation Studies
    • transcript of records is mostly accepted as proof of your language skills (some partner universities may require an additional confirmation of your language skills)
  • Other fields of study
    • certified language test or
    • language certificate: min. level B2
e.g. certificate of the Language Centre of the University of Vienna

Please note: Even if the lectures are taught in English language only, applicants need both an English certificate (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) and a certificate of basic knowledge of the official language of the host country. This also applies for Taiwan and Hong Kong. Basic knowledge corresponds to a semester course of an A1-level (at least 18 units).

If students participate in a language course which has already started at the time of application, a confirmation of participation will initially be accepted as proof of basic knowledge. However, the confirmation of a successful completion of the language course has to be submitted by the end of the current wintersemester.

  • Nominated students can receive a reimbursement of up to 50% of the costs for their language test. The reimbursement will be processed together with the payment of the grant.
  • The proof of language proficiency must be handed in by the submission deadline together with the application documents!
