Financial matters (new)

The information below is relevant for students of the new Erasmus+ program generation. You are part of this group, if your traneeship starts on or after September 1, 2021 (except mobilities to the United Kingdom).

Due to the program change, there will unfortunately be a delay that is beyond the control of the University of Vienna. Unfortunately, you may receive first grant installment (80%) only after the start of your stay

If you have any questions about the financial matters of your Erasmus+ stay, please contact the Erasmus Stipendien team at the International Office (erasmus.stipendien@univie.ac.at).

On this page you will find information on financial support for your Erasmus+ stay:

Erasmus+ Grant

The amount of grant depends upon the country; you will find information on the current level of grants here.

The Erasmus+ mobility grant can be received in addition to any salary to be paid for your traineeship and in addition to federal aid for students (“Studienbeihilfe”).

The prerequisite for payment of the Erasmus+ mobility grant is being nominated for an Erasmus+ stay. Recognition of the traineeship in the form of ECTS credits is not a prerequisite for being awarded an Erasmus+ mobility grant.

Tuition fees and students’ union fee

If the duration of the traineeship amounts to more than half a semester, students are exempted from tuition fees at the University of Vienna. However, the students' union fee must still be paid in order to stay enrolled.

After your nomination, you will be automatically exempted from the tuition fees. Please do not apply for a remission of your tution fees at the admission office.

If you have already payed your tution fees before you were nominated for an Erasmus+ traineeship, you will need to apply for reimbursement. Please read the admission office's information on how to apply for reimbursement. If you have any questions regarding your application for reimbursement, please contact the admission office directly.

Financial top-ups

In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, you can apply for additional financial support (top-ups):

  • Green Travel: Travel expense support for environmentally friendly travel
  • Students with fewer opportunities: This is aimed at (Please note that you can only apply for this top-up once , even if more than one category apply to you):
    • Students receiving a federal scholarship (Studienbeihilfe)
    • Students travelling with their child(ren)
    • Students with disabilities, if this causes additional costs during your stay abroad (compared your usual costs in Austria)
    • Students with a chronic illness, if this causes additional costs during your stay abroad (compared your usual costs in Austria)
  • Inclusion support: If you have a disability or chronic illness, you can apply for inclusion support, in case the top-up for students with fewer opportunities should not be sufficient.

Further information on the top-ups can be found under the respective headline.

Top-up: Green Travel

Erasmus+ participants who travel to and from the host university in an environmentally friendly way can apply for a Green Travel top-up. This includes arrival and departure by bus or train. The application is made via Mobility Online. Application deadline: one month before the start of your stay. Students will be informed as soon as an application is possible.

Federal aid for students and financial aid for studies abroad

Those in receipt of federal aid for students must state that they are receiving federal aid for students in their application. Federal aid for students will continue to be paid during the time spent abroad. If you have any questions on federal aid for students, please contact the Austrian Study Grant Authority in Vienna. (“Stipendienstelle Wien”).

As the legal situation stands, students undertaking an Erasmus+ traineeship are not entitled to financial aid for studies abroad (“Auslandsbeihilfe”).

Top-up for those receiving federal aid for students

If you receive the Austrian federal aid for students ("Studienbeihilfe"), you can apply for the top-up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application is made via Mobility Online. Application deadline: one month before the start of your stay. Students will be informed as soon as an application is possible.

Top-up: Students with children

If you are going to take your child/children with you on your Erasmus+ stay, you can apply for the top-up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application is made via Mobility Online. Application deadline: one month before the start of your stay. Students will be informed as soon as an application is possible.

Top-up: Students with disabilities or a chronic illness

Erasmus+ takes inclusion very seriously. Students with a disability or chronic illness can apply for the top-up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application is made via Mobility Online. Application deadline: one month before the start of your stay. Nominated students will be informed as soon as an application is possible.

Inclusion support

If you have a disability or chronic illness, you can apply for inclusion support instead of the top-up for students with fewer opportunities should this not be sufficient. The amount of this financial support is not fixed, but based on the actual additional financial cost caused by a student’s disability or illness.
