Financial matters
Erasmus+ grants are paid by the International Office. If you have any questions about the financial matters of your Erasmus+ stay, please contact the Erasmus Stipendien team at the International Office (erasmus.stipendien@univie.ac.at).
On this page you will find information on financial support for your Erasmus+ stay:
Erasmus+ Grant
An Erasmus+ mobility grant is a partial grant, i.e. a subsidy for living expenses, with the amount of funding determined according to the group of countries.
From the academic year 2022/23 a maximum of up to 5 months of scholarship can be applied for. The actual funded duration will be re-determined by the University of Vienna for each academic year based on the Erasmus+ budget available for the University of Vienna and will range between 3 and 5 months of Erasmus+ funding.
The actual maximum funding duration will be communicated each summer for the following academic year.
In the academic year 2024/25 the maximum funding is 5 monthly Erasmus+ grants.
The programme countries are divided into three country groups as defined in the European Commission's Programme Guide. The exact grant depends on the host country and in the Erasmus+ call 2024, for traineeships starting from 01.10.2024, amounts to:
- 670 €/month in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden (country group 1)
- 620 €/month in Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus (country group 2) and Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary (country group 3)
The Erasmus+ mobility grant can be received in addition to any salary to be paid for your traineeship and in addition to federal aid for students (“Studienbeihilfe”).
Recognition of the traineeship in the form of ECTS credits is not a prerequisite for being awarded an Erasmus+ mobility grant.
The Erasmus+ grant is paid in two instalments: 70% at the start of the stay and 30% after the stay.
For questions regarding the grants for stays starting before 1 October 2024, please contact erasmus.praktikum@univie.ac.at
Tuition fees and students’ union fee
If the duration covered through the Erasmus+ traineeship grant amounts to more than half a semester, students are exempted from tuition fees at the University of Vienna. However, the students' union fee must still be paid in order to stay enrolled.
After your nomination, you will be automatically exempted from the tuition fees for the funded period. Please do not apply for a remission of your tution fees at the admission office.
If you have already payed your tution fees before you were nominated for an Erasmus+ traineeship, you will need to apply for reimbursement. Please read the admission office's information on how to apply for reimbursement. If you have any questions regarding your application for reimbursement, please contact the admission office directly.
Federal aid for students and financial aid for studies abroad
Those in receipt of federal aid for students must state that they are receiving federal aid for students in their application. Federal aid for students will continue to be paid during the time spent abroad. If you have any questions on federal aid for students, please contact the Austrian Study Grant Authority in Vienna. (“Stipendienstelle Wien”).
As the legal situation stands, students undertaking an Erasmus+ traineeship are not entitled to financial aid for studies abroad (“Auslandsbeihilfe”).
Financial top-ups
In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, further financial support can be applied for (grants and top-ups):
- Travel support: The amount of the travel allowance is paid as a lump sum and depends on the distance between the location of the home university (University of Vienna) and the location of the host institution. Students are awarded higher travel allowances for environmentally friendly travel to and from the host institution.
- Students with fewer opportunities: Please note that you can only apply for this top-up once, even if you belong to several of the below-mentioned groups:
- Students with children requiring care who are taken to the place of internship
- Students with disabilities, if this results in increased financial expenses during the stay abroad (compared to their stay in Austria)
- Students with a chronic illness, if this results in increased financial expenses during the stay abroad (compared to their stay in Austria)
- Inclusion support: Inclusion support is intended to cover additional real financial costs incurred, particularly by participants with physical, mental or health impairments. Inclusion support (based on real costs) and top-up (lump sum increase in individual support) can be received at the same time.
Further information on the top-ups can be found in the respective section.
Travel support
For stays from 01.10.2024 (Call 2024) onwards, participants will be paid a travel allowance for the trip. The amount of the travel allowance depends on the distance between Vienna as the place of origin and the location of the host institution and is paid out as a lump sum.
Students are awarded higher travel allowances for environmentally friendly travel to and from the host institution. This includes arrival and departure by bus, train, carpooling or bicycle. The travel allowance for environmentally friendly travel is applied for together with the Erasmus+ grant. Please note that the Erasmus+ program expects trips to nearby host institutions (< 500km) to be environmentally friendly.
The application must be submitted up to 1 month before the start of the Erasmus+ stay. The distance between the home university and the host institution is automatically calculated when the application is submitted.
Calculation
Distance | Environmentally friendly travel | Non-environmentally friendly travel |
10-99 km | 56 € | 28 € |
100-499 km | 285 € | 211 € |
500-1999 km | 417 € | 309 € |
2000-2999 km | 535 € | 395 € |
3000-3999 km | 785 € | 580 € |
4000-7999 km | 1188 € | 1188 € |
8000 ≥ | 1735 € | 1735 € |
*The distance is calculated using the European Commission's distance calculator and is calculated automatically for your Erasmus+ stay.
Top-up: Students with children
If you are going to take your child/children with you on your Erasmus+ stay, you can apply for the top-up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application is made via Mobility Online. Application deadline: one month before the start of your stay. Students will be informed as soon as an application is possible.
Top-up: Students with disabilities or a chronic illness
Erasmus+ takes inclusion very seriously. Students with a disability or chronic illness can apply for the top-up for students with fewer opportunities in the amount of 250 euros per month. The application is made via Mobility Online. Application deadline: one month before the start of your stay. Nominated students will be informed as soon as an application is possible.
Inclusion Support
Inclusion support is intended to cover additional costs incurred primarily by participants with physical, mental or health impairments. It intends to help participants with fewer opportunities to become mobile.
Contrary to the top-up, inclusion support does not constitute a fixed rate but is oriented towards the actual real costs that arise additionally due to the disability or chronic illness.
Inclusion support (based on real costs) and top-ups can be obtained simultaneously.
Inclusion support can be applied for by the following groups:
- Erasmus+ students belonging to the defined participants with fewer opportunities (students with child/ren, students with disabilities, students with chronic illness).
- Erasmus+ students with fewer opportunities who can demonstrate a real need for additional financial support on a real cost basis
Application deadline: the deadline for application is three months before the start of the stay. For questions regarding the application process and for further information, please contact the Erasmus+ Stipendien Team as early as possible.
