Financial matters
If you have any questions about the financial matters of your Erasmus+ stay, please contact the Erasmus+ Stipendien team at the International Office (erasmus.stipendien@univie.ac.at).
On this page you will find information on financial support for your Erasmus+ stay:
Erasmus+ Grant
An Erasmus+ mobility grant is a partial grant, i.e. a subsidy for living expenses, with the amount of funding determined according to the group of countries.
The funded duration will be re-determined by the University of Vienna for each academic year based on the Erasmus+ budget available for the University of Vienna and will range between 3 and 5 months of Erasmus+ funding.
The actual maximum funding duration will be communicated each summer for the following academic year.
In the academic year 2025/26 the maximum funding is 5 monthly Erasmus+ grants.
The programme countries are divided into three country groups as defined in the European Commission's Programme Guide. The exact grant depends on the host country and in the Erasmus+ call 2025, for traineeships starting from 01.10.2025, amounts to:
- 670 €/month in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden (country group 1)
- 620 €/month in Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus (country group 2) and Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary (country group 3)
The Erasmus+ mobility grant can be received in addition to any salary you receive for your traineeship and in addition to the Austrian federal aid for students (“Studienbeihilfe”).
Recognition of the traineeship in the form of ECTS credits is not a prerequisite for being awarded an Erasmus+ mobility grant.
The Erasmus+ grant is paid in two instalments: 70% at the start of the stay and 30% after the stay.
Tuition fees and students’ union fee
If the duration covered through the Erasmus+ traineeship grant amounts to more than half a semester, students are exempted from tuition fees at the University of Vienna. However, the students' union fee must still be paid in order to stay enrolled.
After your nomination, you will be automatically exempted from the tuition fees for the funded period. Please do not apply for a remission of your tution fees at the admission office.
If you have already payed your tution fees before you were nominated for an Erasmus+ traineeship, you will need to apply for reimbursement. If you have any questions regarding your application for reimbursement, please contact the admission office directly.
Federal aid for students and financial aid for studies abroad
Those in receipt of federal aid for students must state that they are receiving federal aid for students in their application. Federal aid for students will continue to be paid during the time spent abroad. If you have any questions on federal aid for students, please contact the Austrian Study Grant Authority in Vienna. (“Stipendienstelle Wien”).
As the legal situation stands, students undertaking an Erasmus+ traineeship are not entitled to financial aid for studies abroad (“Auslandsbeihilfe”).
Financial top-ups
In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, further financial support can be obtained (grants and top-ups), depending on the academic year. Top-ups are applied for through Mobility Online after the complete application has been approved.
- Travel support: The amount of the travel support is paid as a lump sum and depends on the distance between the location of the home university (University of Vienna) and the location of the host institution. Students are awarded a higher travel support for environmentally friendly travel to and from the host institution.
- Students with fewer opportunities (e.g. students with health issues; students with children requiring care who are taken to the host country of the traineeship): fixed amount of 250€/month.
- Inclusion support: Inclusion support is intended to cover additional real financial costs incurred, particularly by participants with physical, mental or health issues. Inclusion support (based on real costs) and top-up (lump sum increase in individual support) can be received at the same time.
Travel support
From the academic year 2024/25 onwards, participants will be paid a travel support for the trip. The amount of the travel support depends on the distance between Vienna as the place of origin and the location of the host institution and is paid as a lump sum.

Application
The application is submitted via Mobility Online after being nominated for the Erasmus+ traineeship grant.
Please note: According to the guidelines of the European Commission and the Austrian National Agency as the funding organisation, no double funding is permitted!

Environmentally friendly travel

For a trip to be classified as environmentally friendly, at least 60% of the journey must be made by a means of transport classified as environmentally friendly (bus, train, bicycle, carpooling).
Please make sure to document your trip sufficiently (personalized train/bus tickets, debit confirmations, payment confirmations, fuel receipts, in the case of carpooling receipts for joint costs, etc.). Personalized tickets and receipts must be kept for at least 10 years in case of an audit.

Payment
70% of the approved amount will be paid out before the stay as soon as the signed agreement is received by the Erasmus+ Stipendien Team. The remaining 30% are paid after the stay upon submission of the confirmation of stay.
Inclusion Support
Inclusion support is intended to cover additional financial costs incurred primarily by participants with physical, mental or health issues. Inclusion support is intended to help students become mobile. Instead of a lump sum being paid out, the actual real costs incurred, for example due to health problems, are to be covered. Inclusion support (based on actual costs) and a top-up (fixed increase in individual support) can be received at the same time.
-
Who is eligible to apply for inclusion support?
Erasmus+ students who belong to the defined participants with fewer opportunities (students with child/children, students with health impairments).
Erasmus+ students with fewer opportunities, who can prove that they have a real need for additional financial support on a real cost basis.
-
When is the application deadline?
The deadline for applications is three months before the start of the stay. If you have any questions about the application process or require further information, please contact the Erasmus+ Stipendien team as early as possible (erasmus.stipendien@univie.ac.at).
Please note that applying for inclusion support always means additional effort. You should therefore start planning your stay abroad and seek advice as soon as possible.
-
How are the additional costs for inclusion support calculated?
The additional costs incurred abroad are always calculated in comparison to the living and working situation in the sending country. Estimated costs without price research and enclosures cannot be considered.
Examples of additional costs: travel costs for medical examinations, accompanying person, school costs, increased therapy costs etc.
-
Which costs are NOT included in inclusion support?
- Costs that are covered by (health) insurance companies, for example: medication, medical treatment, etc.
- Therapy costs: Unless there is proof that the costs in the host country are higher than in the sending country and that the (health) insurance and the deductible to be paid in the sending country do not cover the costs abroad. In this case, the difference can be covered.
- Costs that Erasmus+ participants regularly incur in the country of the sending institution even without mobility., etc.
- Costs covered by other bodies/institutions.
- Travel costs of mobile Erasmus+ participants. These are covered by the regular Erasmus+ mobility grant. If higher travel costs are incurred due to a special situation/special needs, funding for the additional costs are possible. If Erasmus+ travel cost support according to the distance band is already available, the costs exceeding the distance band can be covered in this case.
-
What happens after an application for inclusion support has been approved?
Once the Erasmus+ inclusion grant has been approved, the University of Vienna will issue you an agreement for this additional funding. After signing, you will receive the inclusion grant.
-
What proof/documents are required for the final accounting of the inclusion support?
After your Erasmus+ stay, you must send ALL invoices to your university, i.e. original/electronic invoices together with proof of payment and validated tickets.
Please note: You must keep official invoices for all expenses paid via the Erasmus+ inclusion grant.
The costs can be incurred from the date on which the written commitment (nomination) for an Erasmus+ stay was made.
-
