Around the university

The University of Vienna has a couple of services and institutions which might be very helpful for you during your stay here:

The University of Vienna has a Main Library (“Hauptbibliothek”) and numerous Special Libraries ( “Fachbereichsbibliotheken”). Students with a valid student ID card can use the libraries free of charge.

With your student ID card you are eligible to use and borrow books from the Main Library as well as from any Special Library.

The Main Library (Hauptbibliothek)

The Main Library is located in the university's main building. There you can pick up and return books. The Main Library has different reading rooms where you can work. The nightshifts@UB have also become rather popular.

Opening hours lending department: Mo - Fr 9.00 am - 7.00 pm
Opening hours reading rooms: Mo - Fr 9.00 am - 10.00 pm, Sa 09.00 am - 8.00 pm

During the holidays, other opening hours apply.

Textbook Collection (Lehrbuchsammlung)
The Textbook Collection (Lehrbuchsammlung) holds a large number of current textbooks of which there is more than one copy available. The books in the textbook collection cannot be ordered in advance; you have to take the books from the shelves yourself. It is possible to lend books in self-service.

In order to lend books from the Main Library they must be ordered online via u:search. U:search lists the university library's entire holdings, including electronic resources such as eBooks, e-Journals and databases.

To grant users access to electronic resources also at home, the library provides the service u:access.

Special Libraries (Fachbereichsbibliotheken)

The Special Libraries hold primarily specialised books related to the respective subjects. As opposed to the Main Library most of the time books must be used in the Departmental Libraries and can be borrowed for weekends only.
