Services of the University of Vienna

The University of Vienna has a couple of services and institutions which are either important or very helpful during your stay here:

  • Libraries

    The University of Vienna has a main library ("Hauptbibliothek") and numerous subject-specific libraries ("Fachbereichsbibliotheken") for the various fields of study. Students with a valid student ID card (u:card) can use the libraries free of charge.

  • Webtools and IT Services

    The Vienna University Computer Center (ZID) provides students of the University of Vienna with a comprehensive range of IT services related to their studies, which can be accessed via your student u:account.

    u:space -- the portal for your degree programme

    u:space is the portal for the organisation of your studies and offers central access to all services that you will require during your studies at the University of Vienna. The main services for incoming students are:

    • Paying your Students' Union fee
    • Registering for courses and exams
    • Viewing your grades and study progress
    • Downloading and printing your transcript of records, confirmation of enrolment, student record sheet and other documents

    Please do not register in u:space until we ask you to do so. You will be able to use these services only after you have been admitted to the University of Vienna by the International Office. We will inform you as soon as you have been admitted. Further information on u:space is provided here.

    Other IT Services:

    Erasmus+ trainees can access these services via their staff u:account. Your u:account will be set up by the Human Resources Department.

  • University Sport Institute (USI)

    The University Sport Institute (USI) offers various sport courses at very favourable prices. Students under 25 years of age receive a discount on the course fees.

  • Language Center of the University of Vienna

    The Language Center of the University of Vienna offers a wide range of courses in German and other languages. Exchange students and staff at the University of Vienna (Erasmus+ trainees) get a discount on the course price of specific courses.

    The Language Center of the University of Vienna provides a free "Language Swap" (Tandem) for students who want to search for a tandem partner. Organisation of the language exchange has to be undertaken independently.

  • Student Spaces

    The established Student Spaces are available for students as places for studying and recreation. The student spaces are intended to make the time spent at the University of Vienna more comfortable and to support students in their everyday university lives.

  • Canteens

    In Vienna you can find a couple of canteens where you can eat at a reasonable price.
    The advisory centre of the Austrian Students' Union at the University of Vienna ("Beratungszentrum der ÖH Uni Wien") hands out a so-called "Mensen-Pickerl" (canteen sticker) to students with a valid u:card starting at the official start of the semester. With this sticker, students can claim a discount in selected canteens.

  • Austrian Students' Union (ÖH)

    The Austrian Students' Union (“Österreichische Hochschüler_innenschaft” – ÖH) represents all students studying in Austria. It is completely independent and autonomous. On the one hand, it represents the students' interests politically vis-à-vis the ministry and the university authorities; on the other hand, it provides services for Austrian and international students.

  • Special needs / Accessibility

    Team Barrierefrei (team for accessible studying)

    Students with impairments, disabilities and/or illnesses, who require assistance with for example changes to modes of lectures and exams, can find comprehensive information on accessible studying at the University of Vienna here.

    Please contact both us – at the International Office -  as well as Team Barrierefrei (team for accessible studying) right after your nomination so that we can best offer our assistance.

    Furthermore, there is a FAQ section for Incoming students with disabilities that provides an overview of relevant and often posed questions.

    Information is also provided by the Referat für Barrierefreiheit of the Austrian Students' Union's representation at the University of Vienna (ÖH).

    Accessibility in the International Office

    Access to some parts of the main university building is difficult for people with disabilities. This also applies to the International Office, which can only be accessed via stairs and for which there is no direct access via lift. Disabled access can be organised by arrangement.

    Accessible accommodation

    Students at the University of Vienna are responsible for making their own living-arrangements and there is no accommodation provided by the University of Vienna.

  • Studying safely

    The University is a large community. Students, academics and administrative staff meet on site and digitally. The following website provides information as well as the most important contact points for working and studying successfully together, as well as potentially useful information on studying in accordance within the legal regulations: Studying safely

    Students can also find out more about the University of Vienna's u:respect – No room for harassment! campaign, which focuses on the prevention of gender-based violence, sexual harassment, and discrimination. It provides information on the support services and the complaints processes available at the University of Vienna.
