Kyoto University is one of the biggest and most prestigious universities in Japan. Founded in 1897, it is located in Japan’s historical centre for art, culture and science. The university impresses with its outstanding research institutions and the wide range of courses on offer.
Collaborations between the universities of Vienna and Kyoto have existed in many research fields, e.g. in law, biology, art history and IT, for many years. In 2019 the partnership between Kyoto University and the University of Vienna was converted into a strategic partnership. The intention is to gradually extend collaboration with Kyoto University over the coming years and to intensify it through new joint projects in other academic fields. Summer schools as well as the "Erasmus+ International" and the "Non-EU Student Exchange" programmes enable networking between students.
At present, students, researchers, teaching staff and the general staff of both universities have the opportunity to participate in mobility programmes or to undertake bilateral research projects as a result of the strategic partnership:
