Introducing the Circle U. Knowledge Hub on Artificial Intelligence and the UNIVIE Chair Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh

11.02.2025

We are excited to announce the launch of the new Circle U. Knowledge Hub on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which aims to tackle the emerging challenges posed by AI, with a focus on developing human-centered, inclusive, and equitable AI. Its mission is to promote the ethical, safe, trustworthy, and sustainable application of AI through a multidisciplinary approach, ensuring that AI systems align with fundamental human rights and societal values.

By bringing together experts from various fields, the Knowledge Hub fosters a synergy that will enable the responsible advancement of AI technologies. The Academic Directors Francesco Marcelloni (University of Pisa) and Miroslav Marić (University of Belgrade) guide the initiative, alongside esteemed academic chairs, including Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh from the University of Vienna.

As the Academic Chair of the Knowledge Hub on AI, Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh brings expertise in AI ethics and the philosophy of technology. A distinguished scholar, he has been a Professor of Philosophy of Media and Technology at the University of Vienna since 2015. His research addresses the ethical implications of AI, robotics, and digital technologies, influencing policy discussions at the European and international levels.

"As new Circle U. Academic Chair for Artificial Intelligence I am looking forward to stimulate interdisciplinary teaching and research collaboration with our partners. Such interdisciplinarity and international cooperation will be crucial in addressing the challenges in developing artificial intelligence that has a positive impact on people, society, and environment. I also wish to promote synergies between the hubs. Artificial intelligence is not an island but intersects with themes such as climate, health, language, and democracy in various ways," says Professor Coeckelbergh.

With leading scholars as academic chairs, the Knowledge Hub on AI is well-positioned to drive meaningful discussions and advancements in the responsible development of AI. We are already looking forward to exciting research outcomes.
