Traineeships at EU, UN & OSCE in Vienna

The European External Service has a long tradition of offering traineeship opportunities to University students with EU Delegations around the world.


Traineeships in EU Delegations have the following main objectives:

  • To provide trainees with a unique experience about the daily work of an EU Delegation while learning about the representation of the EU interests and values outside of the EU.
  • To offer trainees the possibility of discovering directly the working environment of an international organisation such as the EU.
  • To offer trainees the possibility of applying the knowledge acquired during their studies or their early professional life
  • To provide trainees with a substantial insight into multilateral negotiations and decision-making processes in general, the working methods and modes of operation of the OSCE/UN organisations, as well as internal EU coordination mechanisms and Commission policies and assistance programmes.

Trainees  will  be  guided  by  their  Traineeship  Supervisor  in  one  of  the following sections:  

UN Section Trainees will mainly follow the activities of different UN-related bodies in Vienna such as the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) or the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO).

OSCE Section
The traineeship provides an insight into a broad range of thematic and geographical topics on the OSCE agenda as well as the day-to-day working mechanisms of the OSCE. In addition, it gives an insight into internal EU co-ordination mechanisms at a multilateral organisation as well as the role and working methods of the different EU institutions. Trainees will assist in a variety of different meetings and consultations, including OSCE formal and informal meetings and consultations, EU coordination and EU Troika meetings.


Traineeships are addressed to MA students at the University of Vienna with an academic background in political science and law or related disciplines Human Rights). Candidates will present an ability to communicate in the main working languages of the Delegation. 


Candidates should be nationals from EU Member States or pre-accession states (Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Macedonia).


Traineeships will be organised on a full-time basis and last max. 6 months.


The traineeships will be remunerated with 500,00 EUR per month.

Deadline: February 1st, May 15th, October 15th

The trainee will be selected by a jury consisting of representatives of the University of Vienna and the delegation.

As a basis for recognition the trainees must submit the following documents:

o a performance report in the form of an internship report 

o a confirmation of the completion of the internship by the organization
