The grant consists of:

You can apply for funding directly in Mobility Online. You will receive an e-mail containing all the necessary information as soon as you can carry out the relevant steps in Mobility Online (approximately 2 months before the start of your stay).
20 days before the start of your Erasmus+ stay at the earliest you will receive your grant agreement. After signing this document, the University of Vienna will award you the Erasmus+ status for your Erasmus+ student exchange. Due to the Erasmus+ Status you will have a simplified registration process at the host university and you will be exempt from paying tuition fees for the duration of your stay (at the University of Vienna as well as at the host university).
The Erasmus+ grant is paid in two instalments: 70 % at the start of your stay abroad and 30 % after the stay. Settlement takes place per day of your stay abroad (according to your confirmation of stay). Please note: If your stay was shorter than originally indicated, this will be deducted from the second instalment proportionally.
If you do not complete at least 3 ETCS per month of stay, the grant must be returned (only the ECTS recognised in the nominated field of studies at the University of Vienna are relevant!).

The exact duration of the grant provided for Erasmus+ stays abroad is determined by the University of Vienna for each academic year based on the Erasmus+ budget available to the University of Vienna.
Students who are nominated for an Erasmus+ stay abroad as part of the main application round receive a grant for a period of at least 3 months. The actual maximum funding duration will be communicated each summer for the following academic year.
Please note: during the second application round Erasmus+ places will generally be allocated without a grant. (Partial) funding may be possible after reviewing the funding budget.

Travel support
The amount of the travel support is paid as a lump sum and depends on the distance between the location of the home university (University of Vienna) and the location of the host university. Students receive higher travel support for environmentally friendly means of transport to travel to and from their host university.
Please note: Students who receive travel support from another entity (e.g. recipients of the Austrian federal aid for students) cannot receive the travel support via Erasmus+ to avoid double funding.
Note for recipients of the Austrian federal aid for students:
For recipients of the Austrian federal aid for students, the travel support is covered via the grants for study abroad ("Auslandsbeihilfe"). An additional Erasmus+ travel support is excluded in this case due to the prohibition of double funding. Please apply for the “Auslandsbeihilfe” at the competent Austrian Study Grant Authority.
If you do not receive the “Auslandsbeihilfe”, an Erasmus+ travel support can be granted upon presentation of the rejection notice.
Environmentally friendly means of transport
To be classified as an environmentally friendly journey, at least half of the distance travelled must be travelled by a means of transport (bus, train, bicycle, carpooling) classified as environmentally friendly.
Please ensure that you have sufficient documentation for your trip (personalised train/bus tickets, debit confirmations, payment confirmations, fuel receipts, receipts for joint coverage of costs in the case of carpooling, etc.). You must keep personalised tickets and receipts for at least 10 years in case of an audit.
Inclusion support
Inclusion support is intended to cover additional costs incurred by participants with physical, mental or health issues. Instead of a lump sum being paid out (Top-Up), the actual real costs incurred, for example due to health issues, are to be covered. Inclusion support (based on actual costs) and a Top-Up can be received at the same time. The deadline for applications is three months before the start of the stay. If you have any questions about the application process or require further information, please contact the Erasmus+ Stipendien team and start planning your stay as soon as possible.
Who is eligible to submit an application?
- Erasmus+ students who belong to the defined participants with fewer opportunities (students with disabilities, students with child/ren, students with health issues).
- Erasmus+ students with fewer opportunities who can demonstrate that they have a genuine need for additional financial support on a real cost basis.
Tuition fees
During your Erasmus+ stay abroad, you are exempt from paying tuition fees both at the University of Vienna and at the host university.
Please note: You must still pay the students’ union fee (ÖH Beitrag) on time (!), even during your stay abroad – otherwise you will be deregistered at the University of Vienna.
Some host universities charge Erasmus+ incoming students with fees comparable to the students union fee. You cannot be exempted from paying these fees.
Leave of absence and tolerance semester
- You cannot take a leave of absence at the University of Vienna for the duration of your semester abroad. Further information is provided by the Teaching Affairs and Student Services unit. If you are completing a second degree programme at another Austrian university, please contact the relevant university to find out whether you can take a leave of absence from this second degree programme for the duration of your Erasmus+ stay.
- Students who are studying at several universities at the same time must notify all their universities of their planned stay abroad if they wish to maintain their admission.
- An Erasmus+ stay abroad does not increase the number of tolerance semesters, i.e. the standard duration of the programme + 2 tolerance semesters applies.
- The receipt of family allowance, on the other hand, could possibly be extended by one semester due to an Erasmus+ stay. Please contact the tax office in this regard.
Study allowance
Recipients of federal aid for students can apply for a grant for stays abroad with the Austrian Study Grant Authority. Please contact the Austrian Study Grant Authority in this regard.
For recipients of the federal aid for students, the travel support is covered within the grant for stays abroad ("Auslandsbeihilfe"); an additional Erasmus+ travel support is not possible (prohibition of double funding). For details, see the “Travel support” section.
