Financial issues

Scholarship of the University of Vienna

All students of the University of Vienna are offered the possibility to study one semester or an entire academic year at a partner university. During their stay they are awarded a scholarship from the University of Vienna.

Duration of scholarship

For semester places, financial support will be granted for four months (exception: University of Chicago for six months), for the entire academic year for nine months.

An extension of the scholarship is not possible.

Amount of scholarship

Depending on the country, the scholarship is between 250 € and 500 € a month. The travel grants are between 200 € and 600 € (single payment), again depending on the country.

The scholarship ist not cost-covering, but is intended to help students to deal with their increase in living expenses due to their stay abroad.

Payment

After the submission of the signed ”declaration of acceptance“ (Annahmeerklärung), in which you provide your bank account information to us, the grant can be transferred. The "declaration of acceptance“ is sent to you by mail together with the notification letter.

The grant will be transferred in a single payment to the designated account of an Austrian bank. Students, who are nominated for an entire academic year or for the winter semester, will receive the grant approx. in July/August. Students, who are nominated for the spring semester, will receive it approx. in December/January.

Expenses at the partner university

Our exchange students are exempt from paying tuition fees at the partner university during their whole stay.

However, some partner universities charge special fees, like a program fee or a student life fee (e. g. University of Chicago, University of Illinois). Language courses at the partner university are also to be paid by the students themselves.

The University of Vienna does not cover the costs of insurance, visa, accomodation etc. The students must bear those costs by themselves.

Additional grants

Recipients of the Austrian study grant Studienbeihilfe can receive their study grant payments during the stay abroad. Moreover, they are entitled to apply for additional financial assistance (study grant abroad). For further information and application details, please visit http://www.stipendium.at/stbh.
