Erasmus+ grant or Top-Up

ERASMUS+ students will receive an ERASMUS+ grant or “Top-Up” paid by the OeAD GmbH (Österreichischer Austauschdienst – Austrian agency for international mobility).

You should take classes worth 30 ECTS per semester. The ECTS-reimbursement limit for the mobility grant depends on the period of stay abroad and consists of at least 3 transferred ECTS credits per study month abroad (the transferred ECTS at the University of Vienna count!)

The amount of the grant (approx. 300 € per month) depends on the host country. A list of exact grant amounts sorted by host country can be found here. You will receive 80% of the whole grant at the beginning of your ERASMUS+ stay, after submitting the signed contract to the OeAD. The rest of the amount will be paid after your ERASMUS+ stay, after handing in the confirmation of stay to the OeAD. If your stay turns out to be shorter than expected, the corresponding amount will be deducted from your grant proportionally.

If you receive a study grant (Studienbeihilfe) from the Austrian Study Grant Authority (Stipendienstelle) and are planning to go on ERASMUS+, you MUST also apply for financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfe) at the Study Grant Authority. After processing your application, the Study Grant Authority will issue an official notice about financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfenbescheid). You will be required to hand in the official notice about financial aid (Auslandsbeihilfenbescheid) to the OeAD, together with the signed contract. You will receive the “Top-Up” ONLY after handing in both documents to the OeAD. The “Top-Up” is the reduced grant for study grant recipients (for the exact amount please see here). It is paid by the OeAD and consists of the ERASMUS grant for the host country MINUS the financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfe). The 80%-20% regulation also holds for Top-Ups. The financial aid for your studies abroad will be paid monthly by the Study Grant Authority (together with your regular study grant).

Tuition fees

Under the ERASMUS+ program, host institutions are not entitled to charge tuition fees. Moreover, ERASMUS+ outgoing students are entitled to be exempt from paying tuition fees at the University of Vienna for the duration of their ERASMUS+ stay. However, it is absolutely necessary to pay the Student Union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) even during your semester abroad, in order to ensure that you remain enrolled at the University of Vienna. Please note that some host universities charge similar fees (comparable to the Student Union fee) also from incoming ERASMUS+ students.

Leave of absence at the University of Vienna will NOT be granted during a semester abroad. For more detailed information, please contact Teaching Affairs and Study Services. However, if you are enrolled at the University of Vienna as well as at another Austrian university, and are nominated to go on ERASMUS+ trough the University of Vienna, you might apply for a leave of absence at the other university. Please contact the corresponding university for more information.

Students who have been admitted to several universities simultaneously must notify each one of these universities of their proposed stay abroad if they wish to remain enrolled there.

NO additional extra semester for tuition fees ("Toleranzsemester") will be granted because of an ERASMUS+ stay abroad (that is to say, students must remain within the prescribed minimum duration of study + 2 "tolerance semesters"; a stay abroad during this time will NOT increase the number of extra semesters to which you are entitled). Please note, however, that an ERASMUS+ stay might entitle you to an additional semester of child benefit (Familienbeihilfe).

Study Grant Recipients

If you receive a study grant (Studienbeihilfe) from the Austrian Study Grant Authority (Stipendienstelle) and are planning to go on ERASMUS+, you MUST also apply for financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfe) at the Study Grant Authority. After processing your application, the Study Grant Authority will issue an official notice about financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfenbescheid). You will be required to hand in the official notice about financial aid (Auslandsbeihilfenbescheid) to the OeAD.

A hint for the application for financial aid: you can leave out page 2 in the application form (proposed study program and signature of responsible person) if you simply attach a copy of your Learning Agreement before the Mobility signed and stamped by your study program director.

The “Top-Up” is the reduced grant for study grant recipients. It is paid by the OeAD and consists of the ERASMUS+ grant for the host country MINUS the financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfe). The 80%-20% regulation also holds for Top-Ups.

The financial aid for your studies abroad will be paid monthly by the Study Grant Authority and will also include an extra amount (depending on the host country) to help you cover the travel expenses (Reisekostenzuschuss). Moreover, study grant recipients are also eligible for financial aid for language courses abroad; please see here for more information.

Please note that in case you receive financial aid for your studies abroad, you will have to hand in a confirmation of recognition at the Austrian Study Grant Authority after your ERASMUS+ stay. The minimum requirement is 3 ECTS per month of stay abroad. If you do not fulfill this requirement, you will have to pay back the whole amount of financial aid for your studies abroad (Auslandsbeihilfe). However, this does not concern the regular study grant (Studienbeihilfe).

As all the other ERASMUS+ students, you will also have to hand in the confirmation of recognition at the International Office in order to fulfill the requirements for the Top-Up (paid by the OeAD).

In case your situation regarding the study grant changes during your application for ERASMUS+ or during your ERASMUS+ stay, please contact the International Office IMMEDIATELY. This is very important because the type of contract you sign with the OeAD depends on whether or not you receive the study grant.

Students with children

ERASMUS+ outgoing students with children can apply for additional financial aid to the regular ERASMUS+ grant. If granted, the additional financial aid amounts to EUR 120 per month for the first child. For the second and third child, another EUR 30 will be added to this fixed payment, respectively.

Once you have submitted the ERASMUS+ documents (Learning Agreement etc.), please hand in the application for additional grant at the International Office. The International Office will sign your application and forward it for the OeAD who pays the grant.
