Language requirements for traineeship applications

As part of the Erasmus internship application, applicants have to prove appropiate language skills.

The required language proficiency is prescribed by the host institution (at least B1). If in doubt, please contact your desired host institution directly for information about language requirements. If working language and the official language of the host country are not the same, the host institution needs to indicate which one is required.

If your host institution does not indicate the required language skills, students have to prove the skills of level B1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in the language of the respective country.

We accept the following documents:

  • certified language tests (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, etc., a list of equivalent certificates can be found here) or
  • language certificate: min. level B1;
    e.g. certification of the Language Centre of the University of Vienna (‘Sprachkompetenznachweis’ - see below for further information)

Exceptions:

  • Working language German: no proof required
  • Students of philological degrees as well as translation studies: no certificate required
  • High school diploma (Maturazeugnis) from the host country or from an international school in Austria (e.g. Lycée Francais for stays in France): diploma is accepted as proof

The proof of language skills has to be shown to the study programme director when handing in the Learning Agreement for Traineeships for sign and is part of a complete application.
