Registering at the University of Vienna - first steps

Once we have received your nomination (by your home university's International Office), please complete the following steps to register at the University of Vienna:

1. Online pre-registration ("Erstanmeldung Online")

As a first step you are asked to conduct an online pre-registration (Erstanmeldung Online). The online pre-registration is compulsary as we need the information you provide in the process in order to prepare your enrollment. It takes approximately 10 minutes to complete the online pre-registration.

Please do use our "guide for the online pre-registration", as ERASMUS students are required to consider some details when completing the pre-registration.

You will be asked to chose a password during the pre-registration. Please don't forget that password, you will need it again in order to activate your u:account.

If you use a different email address during the online pre-registration than the one provided with your ERASMUS nomination, please to let us know.

Just to avoid misunderstandings please note that as an exchange student you do not have to participate in an entrance examination on the part of the University of Vienna.

Deadlines for the online pre-registration:

May 15th (if you begin in winter semester)
by November 15th (if you begin in summer semester)

2. Activation u:account and u:space / data for u:card

After the successful online pre-registration ("Erstanmeldung Online") we will prepare your enrollment. The next step is the activation of your u:account. With your u:account you will be able to use all kind of IT-Services of the University of Vienna.

You will receive an e-mail with your student ID number and your activation data for the u:account via e-mail by the beginning of August (for the winter semester) or by the beginning of February (for the summer semester).

For the activation, you will need:

  • your student ID number (“Matrikelnummer”) and the link to the web interface for activation
  • the password you chose during the online pre-registration
    (In case you have forgotten your password, further information can be found here. Please send them your student ID number of the University of Vienna instead of the mentioned "UserID".)

You will be asked to choose a u:account password during the activation, which will also be your u:space password. u:space is a central portal which provides access to all services linked to the organisation of your studies.

Your u:account will be active as long as you are enrolled at the University of Vienna (e.g. students of the winter semester until April 30th; summer semester: November 30th).

To prepare your u:card (the new student ID card of the University of Vienna) it is also necessary that you upload a scan of your travel document (passport or identity card - where also your citizenship is mentioned) as well as a passport picture directly on your u:space account and to accept the library regulations. Therefore you will receive a separate e-mail by the 20 July 2017 with further details incl. a direct link.

For your preparation here already details concerning your passport picture:
The head must fill about 2/3 of the picture.
The background has to provide sufficient contrast to the face.

The photograph

  • shall be no older than six months
  • must allow recognition of the person beyond doubt
  • must be uploaded as JPEG or PNG file, max. 5MB
  • has to be in colour
  • must show nothing but the person to be photographed



3. Payment of the Student Union's fee

Exchange students do not have to pay tuition fees at the University of Vienna. However, every student has to pay the fee for the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH = Österreichische HochschülerInnenschaft) of currently € 19.20 per semester (academic year 2017/18), which also includes insurance. Payment is compulsory to complete your enrolment and in order to get your valid student ID card.

After completing the payment it usually takes about a week for the money to be transferred to the system of the University of Vienna. We therefore recommend paying in advance using online banking. If you do not want to pay in advance, we will provide you with a payment form during the Orientation. You are therefore advised to schedule your arrival and the attendence of one of our orientation sessions in due time.

Validation of your student ID card:
We will hand out your student ID card during the orientation session, regardless of whether you've paid the Student Union's fee or not. It will, however, not be valid until you've paid the Student Union's fee. You will be able to purchase the semester ticket for public transport and you may register for courses (you just have to activate your u:account). However, you might not be able to use the library nor get any student discounts.

Please note that if the payment is not registered by the deadline (30 November for the winter semester, 30 April for the summer semester), your enrolment will not be completed. 

You will find information on whether your payment has been registered in your u:space account under "Financial Matters" (choose "Tuition fees/Student Union's fee"). Your payment has been registered, if the balance is set to € 0.
